Pauline Riccius grew up in Lerum outside Gothenburg but has lived in Saltsjöbaden, just outside of Stockholm for many years. She has a degree in economics and has also studied literature, English and French, including a period in Paris. Since the late 1990s, she has held several leading positions in the book industry. Twelve Breaths to the Lake is her third novel and the first in a trilogy about female friendship, liberation and life choices in 1940s Norrland, the North part of Sweden. At the center of the story is a young doctor´s wife who accompanies her husband to a sanatorium in the small community of Sandträsk during the war years – a character inspired by the author’s own grandmother. This book is shortlisted as Book of the Year 2026.
